Empowering women, shaping the future - our project in India is picking up speed!

Our member Gebeco visited our joint project in Chamoli, India, and discussed with the women from four surrounding villages possible ideas and wishes for workshops and courses on the production of local products. As the women want a good education for their children, Alicia from Gebeco also taught the children some English.
Gebeco visits the project
Together with Gebeco and our local project partner Fernweh Fair Travel, we are working in a rural region in India to empower women by creating opportunities for them to generate their own income.
At the end of March, Alicia Kern, responsible for communication & sustainability at Gebeco, was in India with a travel group and also visited our joint project in Chamoli, in the Indian Himalayas.
Women's wishes and ideas
In the community center, which we built as part of the project and which was opened with a traditional puja ceremony at the beginning of the year, numerous women from four surrounding villages came together for a joint exchange. The meeting focused on the women's ideas, wishes and visions for the future. The women's desire for better educational opportunities, especially for their children, was particularly strong.
A wish that was immediately put into practice: Alicia gave English lessons to a total of 81 children on four evenings - a first, powerful step towards educational equality.
But this is just the beginning: whether sewing workshops, herbal tea courses or support in the production of spice blends - there is great interest in further educational opportunities. The local women are full of energy and want to actively shape their lives and those of their families.
Meetings with government representatives
Together with our project coordinator Poonam Rawat-Hahne from Fernweh Fair Travel, Alicia also held talks with local government representatives and discussed possibilities for support from the local government as well as long-term prospects.
With these new insights, we will continue to work in the coming months to support the local women to become independent.
