Training hotel employees to reduce plastic

As part of the joint industry project "Plastic-free vacations, Balearic Islands", 134 employees from two Mallorcan hotel groups were trained to reduce plastic waste. Our partner Cleanwave conducted a total of three workshops for over 100 employees of Universal Beach Hotels and two workshops with 30 participants for R2 Hotels.

The workshops encourage employees to participate in the sustainability and plastic waste reduction strategy of the respective hotel by asking them to find solutions to the challenges they might face, so that they become real ambassadors for change.

Workshops on the status quo and solutions around plastic reduction

In the first part of the workshops, participants were informed about the importance of reducing single-use plastic and CO2 emissions, the importance of recycling and the use of environmentally friendly products. In the second part of the workshop, the Cleanwave team explained what the respective hotels are already implementing in terms of sustainability and also presented the new measures to reduce single-use plastic.

In dynamic role plays, the participants were asked to give feedback, especially on possible operational challenges or how communication needs to be adapted so that guests support the changes. The third part of the workshop focused on finding solutions to these problems.

Workshops increase motivation, commitment and knowledge

At the end of the workshops, all participants were highly motivated to work towards the common goal of reducing single-use plastic consumption.

This was also reflected in the results of our surveys, in which we asked about knowledge, motivation and commitment both before and after the workshops. After the workshops, employees felt more involved because they were able to contribute ideas and suggestions, and also more confident when it came to explaining the sustainability measures to other employees or hotel guests.
