Conscious travel - what convinces travelers?

The term "sustainability" is used so frequently these days that many people are sceptical about it. In the field of tourism, communicating climate and socially responsible offers therefore poses a particular challenge. Travel cannot be 100% sustainable per se - it is much more a question of consciously focusing on more environmentally and socially compatible alternatives. Simply saying that a trip is "sustainable" is not enough to convince travelers.

Nudging for conscious travel behaviour

One particularly effective method of motivating people to behave positively is "nudging", which literally means "nudging". Nudging is a communication method that aims to influence human decision-making behavior without prescribing or restricting certain behaviors. Various nudges can be used to encourage people to adopt more sustainable travel behaviour.

Joint project by Futouris and Tourism Ireland launched by

A joint project by Futouris and Tourism Ireland Germany is now investigating how travellers to Ireland can be made aware of the destination's commitment to sustainability and motivated to use climate-friendly offers. A concept is being developed that includes effective "nudging" methods for communicating sustainable travel offers in Ireland and is being tested in practice. These effective nudges range from transparent additional information in the booking tool to raise awareness of greener travel options, to carbon footprint comparisons of selected means of transport and the adjustment of pre-selected standard options when booking. The results of this project will be analyzed as part of an academic thesis.
The project will run until the end of 2024 and will deliver exciting results on how nudging can be used in tourism to make sustainable travel options more attractive and thus contribute to a more environmentally friendly future.
