The Futouris project on destination resilience has now entered its final phase, in which final training sessions on sustainability and resilience were held in the Dominican Republic, Sri Lanka and Namibia. As part of the project, questions regarding the certifiability of destinations with regard to resilience were addressed, detailed communication materials were developed and resilience guidelines were made available

Final project phase with training sessions

Our project on destination resilience has now entered its final project phase. As part of this, the final training sessions on sustainability and resilience have been held in the project destinations Dominican Republic, Sri Lanka and Namibia over the past few weeks.

In Sri Lanka, advanced training sessions were held on risk management and crisis preparedness. Thanks to the commitment of our local project partners, women in particular (75%) were able to take part in the training courses, as free childcare was provided, among other things. In addition, over 80 tourism stakeholders were trained in fire safety and first aid in September.

Training in the Dominican Republic and founding of the Interinstitutional Roundtable on Resilience

Training measures were also carried out in the Dominican Republic and the Interinstitutional Roundtable on Resilience: Unidos por Samaná was founded. This is a roundtable made up of representatives from various sectors relevant to sustainability and resilience in order to coordinate further activities in Samaná. The first meeting of the roundtable was held on September 16, 2022 in the local City Hall. Due to the serious and devastating consequences of Hurricane Fiona, which hit the island shortly afterwards, all resources are currently being used for acute crisis management. However, the Roundtable plans to resume its work in the near future.

Certification of destination resilience

During the project, we also looked at the extent to which destinations can be certified in terms of their resilience and which aspects should be taken into account. To this end, a corresponding report was prepared in collaboration with our partner mascontour and a virtual exchange with representatives of global certification organizations was also held at the end of September.

Guidelines for communication

In order to better address the increasingly frequent crisis events in tourism destinations in the future and to enable the transferability of our project results to other destinations, various communication materials were developed as part of the project.

  • A Destination Resilience Analysis Guideline with detailed conceptual background information on resilience and sustainability and a detailed description of our approach including good practice examples from the project destinations

  • A short version of the guideline with practical approaches can be found in our overview brochure, which is available in German, English and Spanish.

  • Approaches and concrete results and measures from our project destinations can be found in our Destination Manuals in the shorter Destination Flyers.

All products are available for download on the Futouris project website.
