Sustainable food in focus at the Welthungerhilfe panel on food waste

As part of this year's ITB, Welthungerhilfe hosted a panel discussion under the motto "Food Waste and Tourism - Taste it, don't waste it". Alongside Torsten K. Schulze (Hotel Steigenberger) and Helene Mutschler (Welthungerhilfe), Swantje Lehners from Futouris took part in the panel discussion and provided information on the current status of the Futouris industry project Sustainable Food.

Futouris study on avoiding food waste

In the completed baseline study, Futouris project partner MODUL University Vienna explored the question of what contribution the tourism industry can make to avoiding food waste. The results of the survey of service providers and customers were incorporated into a Sustainable Food Handbook, which will be published in March of this year.

Model projects for practical implementation

In the run-up to the ITB, Futouris member companies decided to transfer the findings into practice as part of two model projects. On the one hand, the projects focus on guest communication with regard to a more sustainable food offer and, on the other hand, on avoiding food waste in hotels and on cruise ships.

Futouris Get Together under the motto Sustainable Food

The evening get-together at the Futouris counter was also held under the motto Sustainable Food. Futouris members, long-standing and new project partners and other sustainability experts met around the regional organic buffet. Our current project partners from MODUL University Vienna and the Vienna University of Applied Sciences of WKW Dagmar Lund-Durlacher, Klaus-Peter Fritz and Hannes Antonschmidt presented the draft version of the Sustainable Food Handbook for practice partners, which they developed on the basis of the baseline study they conducted.

Commitment of international project partners

Also present at the Get Together was the long-standing project partner Welthungerhilfe, represented by Helene Mutschler and Christian Stark, as well as Natalie Elassiouty as a representative of the Responsible Inclusive Business Hub, a GIZ sub-organization from Egypt. A joint sponsorship project is currently being planned with GiZ Egypt and one of our members.

The Futouris project partners Local Food Experts traveled from the beautiful island of Crete. Maria Valerga, Sotiris Di. Bampagiouris and Kostas Boyouris have been implementing the Futouris project "Sustainable Viticulture" since January of this year, a practical project to initiate sustainability processes among farmers and strengthen local supply chains on Crete. For the get-together, they organized a wine tasting with traditional Cretan wine varieties.
