Project objectives

Rising energy costs also affect the tourism industry

People across Europe are looking with concern at rising energy costs, and tourism is also severely affected. At the same time, the climate crisis and its effects are creating major challenges for the travel industry: heatwaves, droughts and heavy rainfall are increasingly affecting the most beautiful time of the year.

In Europe, only 17% of energy comes from renewable energy sources, while 35% of energy is produced from oil, for example. However, the burning of fossil fuels contributes significantly to climate change.

airbnb and Futouris support hosts in saving energy

This is where the Futouris and airbnb project comes in: Hosts and guests are made aware of how they can save energy in their apartment/holiday accommodation and thus make a positive contribution to climate protection.

The first step is to develop energy-saving guidelines for both hosts and guests.

In the version for hosts, tips are shared on energy-saving equipment/furnishings/maintenance of the apartments as well as on communication to guests to encourage them to save energy. Guests receive tips on how to save energy during their stay in the vacation home.

The tips are based on ideas from hosts in the Airbnb community, which are reviewed and supplemented by Futouris.

In the next step, Airbnb will distribute guidelines to Airbnb hosts and guests, including through emails and social media communication in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Slovenia, Slovakia, Czech Republic, Poland, Lithuania, Latvia, Hungary, Azerbaijan, Romania, Estonia and Georgia as well as directly in Airbnb accommodations, e.g. through PDF posters.

Furthermore, ideas are being developed to create incentive measures to increase the impact of the energy-saving tips, e.g, Subsidies to improve energy efficiency in the apartments, discount campaigns for products that help to save energy.

The following activities are planned

  • Development of a guide to saving energy for hosts and guests

  • Distribution of the guides to airbnb hosts and guests, e.g. directly and through emails and social media.directly and through emails and social media communication in Central and Eastern European countries

  • Development of incentive measures to increase the impact of the tips
