Human rights due diligence for tour operators
Since the unanimous ratification of the "Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights" by the UN Human Rights Council in 2011, it should be a top priority for companies to respect human rights in today's globalized economy, Human rights in today's globalized economy - even beyond legal guidelines. This applies in particular to tourism with its complex value chain and the large number of service providers and destinations involved. A structured learning process is therefore necessary in which the key human rights issues for the tourism industry are identified and gradually taken into account in business processes.
In 2017/2018, the DERTOUR Group and Futouris worked together in the sponsored project "Human rights due diligence for tour operators" to develop practical tools for the analysis of human rights risks in the business environment of large tourism companies, to test these in practice and then to transfer them to the industry. With the help of a "Destination Risk Register", human rights risks in tourism were identified for individual destinations. Various stakeholders were involved in the analysis and learning process as part of a comprehensive survey. Based on this, the DERTOUR Group developed a strategy for upholding human rights due diligence in the corporate environment, which has since been summarized and made available to interested tourism companies in a practical guide.
The practical tool "Destination Risk Register" was transferred to the industry in cooperation with the Roundtable Human Rights in Tourism in order to enable other companies to use an easy-to-use tool with up-to-date information for the analysis of human rights risks in their business environment free of charge.
It is available for use at the following link: Destination Risk Register
