Going green at the travel agency
Under the motto ‘Going green at the travel agency’, the Futourists of the QTA travel agency cooperation alliance implemented their sponsorship project ‘Travel Agency Ecology’. Travelife acted as the training partner, providing a comprehensive training programme for the approximately 7,000 QTA travel agencies that covered all aspects of sustainable tourism. The aim was to support travel companies in taking responsibility for the social and environmental impact of their offerings. As travel agencies are predominantly small businesses, they needed tailor-made training to meet the requirements for credible sustainability.
Advice in travel agencies played a central role in promoting sustainable tourism. The first step was to train owners and employees in resource-efficient practices and an understanding of sustainability. The project focused on practical and results-oriented measures. These included the development and implementation of action plans and the appointment of sustainability managers in travel agencies. Targeted consumer advice also laid the foundation for increased demand for sustainable travel products.
The project was based on Travelife's internationally recognised, scientifically proven certification system, which has been awarded ‘GSTC recognised’ status. Thanks to its modular structure, the content could be gradually expanded and implemented in a practical manner. The introductory module on CSR was geared towards the everyday practice of travel agencies and promoted a strong identification with sustainability through the achievement of self-set goals.
The direct impact of the project was evident in improved environmental measures in travel agencies. These included energy savings, increased use of renewable energies, reduced paper and material consumption, and increased purchasing of sustainable products.
