Project objectives

Reduction of single-use plastic in three pilot hotels of the Hilton Group

A pilot project to reduce tourism-related plastic waste was carried out on the Balearic Islands. As part of the "Plastic-free vacations" project, Futouris has developed and tested innovative measures in several hotels on Mallorca and Ibiza to reduce the amount of plastic waste and increase the recycling rate.

Futouris member schauinsland-reisen and the Hilton Group UAE hotel chain are transferring and adapting these results to three Hilton hotels in the United Arab Emirates.

Analysis of plastic consumption and implementation of measures to reduce

In a first step, the plastic waste generated in the three participating hotels (quantity and type) is identified and analyzed as part of an audit in each hotel. In addition, the status quo of the existing recycling and waste systems in the destination is recorded.

The results are presented to the hotels and their employees in kick-off workshops and discussed. Working groups are formed with the employees and suppliers involved who want to actively support the project in order to jointly develop measures to reduce waste.

In order to involve and motivate employees to support the initiative, interactive workshops are held in the respective hotels in which the measures developed are presented and employee feedback is obtained.

The jointly developed measures are then implemented and tested in the three project hotels. In an accompanying analysis, waste volumes are measured and feedback on handling and any operational challenges is obtained from hotel employees and suppliers, and guests are asked for their feedback on the measures.

After the test phase, a guideline with recommendations for action to reduce packaging waste is drawn up on the basis of the project results. This guide will be made available to all Hilton hotels and Futouris members.

The following activities are planned

• Identification and analysis of plastic waste (quantity and type) in the three participating pilot hotels as part of a SUP (single-use plastic) audit

• Presentation and discussion of the results in workshops with relevant employees:

• Development and implementation of measures to reduce single-use plastic consumption

• Measurement of consumption and waste volumes

• Collection of feedback on the implemented measures from employees and guests

• Where necessary Adjustment of implemented measures

• Summary of results for dissemination with other Hilton Group hotels and Futouris member companies
